1. B/W 7.0 X 9.25 inch photo of 4 people surfing in an outrigger canoe at Waikiki beach with Diamond Head in the background. This albumen print is from circa 1900 as this image is found on Hawaiian postcards, printed in color, postmarked as early as 1903. The photo is attached to the original mount/backing board as was common at the time for the large, thin, albumen prints. No ID marks are found on the front or back of this early surfing image. Also included with this photo is an original "undivided back" postcard (1898-1907) that has this photo image printed in color, unused. 2. B/W 5.50x7.50 inch photo of a surfing outrigger canoe with 5 people at Waikiki with Diamond Head in the background. The photo has been highlighted with with white color for the wave's breaking foam. Stamped on the back, –Williams Studio, Honolulu, T.H.” and in pencil is "1/25”. Circa 1905 as the image is found on Hawaiian tourist postcards of this time. Image printed on a larger sheet that is 8.0 x 10.0 inches. 3. B/W 10.0 x 8.0 inch photo of Jordan's King Hussein "wake surfing" behind a motorboat. Rear has printed "Copyright by Reporters Assoces, Paris" with a blue stamp from Reuters International Service dated 1 Aug 1966. 4. B/W 5.0 x 7.0 inch photo of 6 surfboards at the beach in Waikiki with people sitting on the beach leaning back on several boards. The October 1938 National Geographic magazine had an article on Hawaii and included was a photo of 6 women standing in front of 6 old wood surfboards "at Waikiki for a surf ride". This original photo is at the identical Waikiki location with 2 of the same old wood surfboards in the photo, for a total of 7 old classic wood surfboards. Circa would be 1938. Included with this photo is the 1938 page from the National geographic October issue showing the original photo along with the Nat Geo's Flashback page several years ago showing the 1938 photo again. 5. B/W 8.0 x 10.0 inch photo of Makaha, Oahu, late 1940s with 3 known big wave surfers. "Please Credit Hawaii Visitors Bureau Photo, Honolulu, Hawaii" is stamped on the rear of the photo. On page 59 of Grady Timmons book Waikiki Beachboy, 1989, this 20 foot Makaha wave is pictured with George Downing, Buzzy Trent and Woody Brown taking off. This photo is a few seconds later when they were riding the wave and produced by the Hawaii Visitors Bureau for news outlets and newspapers to use it. Wally Froiseth said this wave's photo "brought a new surge of California surfers to Hawaii." 6. B/W 4.0 x 2.25 inch photo of a tourist, Sam Kahanamoku, brother of Duke Kahaanmoku, and one of the wooden surfboards in No. 4 photo in this set and taken at the same location as photo No. 4. It came from an album that wrote that Sam K. was in the photo and it certainly looks like him. This surfboard here is also the second from the right in the No. 4 photo. Circa late 1930s based on the 1938 date of No. 4. 7. 5.0 x 7.0 inch photo of an outrigger canoe surfing in Waikiki with Diamond Head in the background. No stamp or studio is named on the back but the following is written in pencil: Diamond Head 1925 U.S.S. Nevada. 5 people in the outrigger canoe with a surfer on the wave also. 8. B/W 4.0 x 8.0 inch photo of 2 outrigger canoes surfing in Waikiki with Diamond Head in the background. Written on the back in pencil is "Diamond Head, extinct crater.Surf riding in Waikiki". Also stamped on the back is "R.W. Perkins, Photographer, Honolulu". This image was used for at least 2 printed, color "undivided back" postcards that were printed from 1898 to 1907, so we know the original is from that date. However, this image was printed on more recent photo paper, more like from the 1920s. It has marking indicative of cropping off this photo for some purpose. Included with this photograph are 2 different "undivided back” unused postcards from circa 1905 that have this photo image printed in color on the postcards. 9. B/W 5.0 x 8.0 inch photo of large outrigger canoe with the original Outrigger Canoe club right in the background. Written in pencil on the back is –In Hawaii, The danish crew of the (2 words cannot figure out) ship Copenhagen - (1word??) on the shore of Hawaii + Prince Axel” Prince Axel Christian Georg of Denmark was born in 1888 and served in the navy for his military service. Based on the lanai shown in the photo for the Outrigger canoe club, this photo is post 1914. Based on swim suits, all wool "full suits w/shirts”, and not one variation from this kind of swimsuit, we estimate the date in the early 1920s. Lastly, this is one of the largest koa wood outrigger canoes seen in photos of this era.
