NO RESERVE You are bidding on a unique 10' 6" 1988 Skip Frye Swallow Tail (swish predecessor). In the late 1980s, Skip Frye left his stall at Diamond Glassing and rented a small storage and shaping room next to Windansea Beach An’ Surf at the foot of Felspar St. -- just yards from Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. With his wife Donna running interference and managing the business, Skip could just focus on shaping. This was the beginning of a renaissance. Skip was surfing each day, multiple times in fact, at his beloved home beach and the inspiration for new shapes started to flow. Skip started to create new models, new lengths of old classics and from 1988-1998 he single-handedly resurrected interest in the Eagle (Gliders) the Fish and created the ever-popular Fish Simmons. As seen in Surfers Journal issue #2, Skips new Surf Shop “Harry’s” paired with Clark Foam releasing 12’ blanks, created a new interest in “Cross Country” surfing. This board is the beginning of that movement. Shaped for Tourmaline local, Morgan, this board is shaped by Skip Frye, airbrushed by the legendary Jim Evans and glassed by Moonlight Glassing. This 35-year old board looks nearly showroom new with just a few dents and storage scuffs. With glass-on carbon fiber fins, a “Big Dog” laminate as well as Donna Frye's hand drawn “Indian Band” graphics (inspired by the Chumash Indians of Malibu) this board is one-of-a-kind. Also added to style factor is the classic Frye model is the awesome Skip and his dog Leroy at Malibu laminate which was only used on boards in 1988. If you trace this boards DNA it would be considered a close cousin to the popular “Swish” model but the bottom contours and dropped rocker show that it’s a highly desired older version. The boards from pre-2000 tend to have a more relaxed rocker, less roll in the nose and more mellow bottom concaves.
